How to Make Your Edible Packaging Child-Resistant

For edibles, child-resistant (CR) packaging usually isn’t optional — it’s required, and retailers won’t stock you without it. Here’s the plain-English version of how to get it right.

What “child-resistant” actually means

CR packaging is designed to be difficult for young children to open while still being accessible to adults. For mylar bags, that typically means a child-resistant zipper that requires a press-and-slide motion, often combined with a tamper-evident heat seal.

Bag + seal, together

A CR zipper handles reusability; a heat seal above the zipper adds tamper evidence for the first open. Together they meet the intent of most regulations and signal a serious brand. See our heat-sealing guide for technique.

Don’t forget labeling

CR packaging and compliant labeling go hand in hand: dosage per piece and per pack, ingredients, allergens, and required warnings. Pair your bags with custom labels and stickers to apply it cleanly.

Test before you scale

Before a big run, open and close your CR bags yourself and confirm the seal and zipper perform every time. Consistency is what keeps you compliant and keeps retailers happy.
